What does the qualification cover?

This qualification will enable learners to develop the knowledge and skills needed when supporting teaching and learning in primary, secondary or special schools. It covers a wide range of areas including children and young people’s development, supporting those with disabilities or special educational needs and communication and professional relationships.

It is also a must-have for all those undertaking Level 2 Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools.

About this qualification

 

The Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning has been designed to provide learners with an understanding of the knowledge and skills needed when working directly with children and young people in school or college environments. It covers a wide range of areas including children and young people’s development, supporting children and young people’s positive behaviour and communication and professional relationships.

It’s aimed at learners working in roles that support pupils’ learning in primary, secondary or special schools, as well as colleges.

 

What are the entry requirements?

The minimum age for a learner taking this qualification is 16 years old.How is this qualification structured?

 

There are 11 mandatory units in this qualification.

Do you need to be working to take this qualification?

Learners will need to be working or on a practical placement for the duration of the course in a learning environment (school or college) as they need to show competence in both skills and knowledge.

 

What related qualifications can you progress to?

This qualification shares 3 mandatory units with the NCFE CACHE Level 2 Award in Support Work in Schools and Colleges (603/2478/8) and, therefore, provides opportunities for direct progression for those learners transitioning from the Level 2 Award in Support Work in Schools and Colleges to this level 2 certificate.

How is it assessed?

Students will be required to complete a number of assignments. Your personal tutor will review, mark and provide you with feedback on your work.

All units are internally assessed. Assessment enables the learner’s workplace practice to provide evidence for individual units as well as the whole qualification. This course requires an assessment of your practical skills within your working environment. It is essential that you secure a placement that can provide you with a suitably qualified teacher and workplace assessor who can observe you, comment on your skills and write a report to meet the assessment requirements. This direct observation will be used as evidence towards your qualification. Methods of assessment could include:

  • Observation of practice

  • Witness evidence when directed by the sector skills assessment strategy

  • Professional discussion

  • Reflection on own practice in real work situations

  • Written assignments

COURSE DURATION

Do you need to be working or volunteering to take the qualification? Yes, you will need to be working, volunteering or on practical placement, as you need to show competence in both knowledge and skills.

How long does it take to complete?

You can usually complete it in 6 months online and 5 months (online or blended online learning.
